2019 Project Call Notice of Intent (NOI)

The Reducing EMbodied Energy and Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) Institute intends to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Institute roadmap projects. The total investment will be approximately $24 million with 50% in REMADE funding and 50% awardee cost-share. REMADE anticipates issuing two (2) RFPs (19-01 and 19-02) during Budget Period 3 (BP3: September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020).  The first RFP (19-01) will be issued on or about October 7, 2019. The second RFP (19-02) is anticipated to be released in April 2020.

This Notice of Intent (NOI) is for RFP 19-01.  A separate NOI will be issued for RFP 19-02.

For RFP 19-01, REMADE plans to award projects in topics discussed below in support of the two Areas of Interest (AOI):

A. Research & Development (R&D), and

B. Education & Workforce Development (EWD).

For 19-01, REMADE will allocate up to $11 million toward R&D aligned with four REMADE Nodes (research focus areas), and approximately $1 million will be allocated to EWD. The four Nodes that will be supported through any of the research projects that may be selected as a result of the anticipated RFP are: 1) Design for Re-X[1], 2) Manufacturing Materials Optimization, 3) Remanufacturing & End-of-Life Reuse, and 4) Recycling & Recovery.

Area of Interest (AOI) Total Investment REMADE Funding[2] Member Cost Share # of Awards Anticipated Period of Performance
R & D $22 million $11 million $11 million (1:1 cost share) 12–18 12–24 months

The updated Preliminary RFP Topics (DRAFT) can be found below.

These topics were identified with input obtained from the REMADE Roadmap (https://remadeinstitute.org/technology-roadmap) and REMADE’s standing committees. The budgets set forth are targets that may be revised based on actual proposals submitted to construct an optimized a portfolio of projects.

Disclaimer

All the information contained in this NOI is subject to change. REMADE plans to issue the RFP for the two AOI on or about October 7, 2019 via the REMADE website (https://remadeinstitute.org/)  and an informational email to the current membership. Questions about this NOI will not be entertained.

This is a Notice of Intent (NOI) only. REMADE may issue a RFP as described herein, that is different, or REMADE may not issue an RFP at all.

[1]     Re-X is shorthand for recovery, reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling. However, while not specifically called out in the above definition, sub-processes such as disassembly, sorting, inspection, cleaning, and collection should also be considered when considering Re-X within the manufacturing industry.

[2] Funding is the REMADE portion of the total funding. Proposers need to provide the equivalent cost-share for any project proposed.

Technology Roadmap

The development of the REMADE Institute Technology Roadmap has been possible due to the ongoing, effective collaboration the Institute is honored to have among its members and partners from companies, universities, national labs, trade associations and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO). Input received from on-line surveys and interviews, in addition to the Technology Roadmap workshop held in September 2017, created the foundation for this roadmap.
