Deborah Thurston

Node Lead, Design for Reuse & Disassembly

Dr. Thurston is the Lead for the Design for Reuse & Disassembly Node of the REMADE Institute. She oversees her node’s contributions to the development and implementation of the Institute’s research roadmap, guides research activities, and interfaces with industry members. Dr. Thurston comes to REMADE with a distinguished career in research, where she has focused on supporting decisions in sustainable design, life cycle engineering, and complex systems development with mathematical rigor. Dr. Thurston’s work has provided a valuable framework for addressing trade-offs in design engineering under conditions of uncertainty—a tool that will prove invaluable to the REMADE Institute. Prior to joining the Institute, Dr. Thurston has served as a Professor of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering, and as the Director of the Decision Systems Laboratory at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Thurston holds an MS and PhD in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
